Transistor as a switch

If the circuit uses the BJT transistor as a switch , then the biasing of the transistor, either NPN or PNP is arranged to operate the transistor at both sides of the I-V characteristics curves shown below. A transistor can be operated in three modes, active region, saturation region, and cut-off region. In the active region, the transistor works as an amplifier. The two operating regions of transistor  Saturation Region   (fully-ON) and the  Cut-off Region  (fully-OFF) were used to operate a transistor switch. However, both the NPN & PNP type bipolar transistors can be made to operate as “ON/OFF” type solid-state switch by biasing the transistors Base terminal differently to that for a signal amplifier. Solid state switches are one of the main applications for the use of transistors to switch a DC output “ON” or “OFF”. A Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) has three terminals connected to three doped semiconductor regions. In an NPN transistor, a thin and lightly doped P-type  base  is sandwiched between a heavily doped N-type  emitter  and another N-type  collector ; while in a PNP transistor, a thin and lightly doped N-type  base  is sandwiched between a heavily doped P-type  emitter  and another P-type  collector . In the following, we will only consider NPN BJTs. In many schematics of transistor circuits (especi ally when there exists a large number of transistors in the circuit), the circle is the symbol of a transistor is omitted. The figures below show the cross-section of two NPN transistors . Note that although both the collector and emitter of a transistor are made of N-type semiconductor material, they have totally different geometry and therefore can not be interchanged. All previously considered components (resistor, capacitor, inductor, and diode) have two terminals (leads)

Bipolar junction transistors are of two types mainly. NPN transistor is one of the types of Transistors (BPT). NPN stands for Negative-Positive-Negative configuration. It is the most often used in all  types of transistors . Basically, in NPN transistors two n-type (negative) materials dope the single p-type (negative) materials. In simple words, one p-type semiconductor material is present between the two n-type semiconductor materials.
